2011 NOTCH Pipe Welding Challenge Results

Notch Mechanical Constructors has been conducting the “Notch Pipe Welding Challenge” for 13 years. The objective of this event is to encourage the development of welding skills in vocational students, reward excellence in pipe welding achievement and encourage students to consider the piping trades as a career choice.
The Notch Pipe Welding Challenge benefits not only the students, but local vocational schools as well. Participating schools conduct the pipe weld test for their competitors at their school which are collected by the proctor and judged by an independent volunteer weld inspector. Teachers are notified which competitors’ qualify for the Bend-0ff competition at Notch Mechanical’s shop on a chosen date in May of each year. All competitors are also invited to attend the Bend-Off competition which includes tours, prizes and lunch. Eighty-four welding students competed in this competition from twelve different vocational technical schools in southern New England including:

All participants receive an event T-shirt. All students who meet ASME criteria to be a qualified welder are recognized. The “Top Notch Welder” who achieves the quality in compliance with ASME guidelines is awarded $500 as well as many other prizes. The “Top Notch Welder’s” school receives a $500 gift certificate to purchase welding supplies for their school welders for the future use.
