Notch Mechanical Constructors received the prestigious Jury Award as the year’s best of the best at Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut’s 6th annual Excellence in Construction award ceremony held on January 24, 2008.
Notch worked on the $30 million project to construct Aspen Aerogel’s first world scale production facility utilizing its advanced technology manufacturing process. As a subcontractor to SPEC Process Engineering & Construction, Notch installed the process and utility piping systems used to manufacture Aspen Aerogel’s super-insulating blankets. The Notch team installed over 30,000 feet of specialty piping systems, which had to pass x-ray inspection. One of the project’s biggest challenges was to complete this very complex process piping installation in coordination with the other contractors doing the electrical, fireproofing, sprinklers, and building construction in the same area. The Notch team of craft and management professionals worked cooperatively with the designers, owners, inspectors and other subcontractors to demonstrate the excellence that is possible with robust planning, team commitment and sustained effort. The subcontract value was $3 million and required over 26,500 man-hours to complete.
Projects submitted in this annual competition are judged by an independent panel of judges which include architects, engineers and university professors. Project submittals must adhere to rigorous application requirements for consideration of the year’s top honors. Contractors must include references and indicate their status as an ABC Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) contractor as well as an ABC Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC).
This years event was held at the Aquaturf in Southington, CT, with almost 700 of the industry in attendance. The award was accepted by members of the project team.
